In an emotional turn of events, Emmerdale’s couple, Ruby Fox Milligan and Caleb, decide to leave the village for a fresh start. The drama unfolds when Ruby comes home to find Caleb packing up their son Nikki’s belongings. Nikki had left the village the previous week with his boyfriend, Sunny, after discovering that Ruby had intentionally run over Ethan Anderson shortly before his death. This revelation was the last straw for Nikki, who was already frustrated with his parents’ behavior.
Nikki felt particularly hurt by Caleb, believing his father was always disappointed in him and never showed him love. Caleb’s actions seemed to confirm this, as Ruby initially thought he was trying to erase all traces of their son. However, Caleb revealed a deeper pain, explaining that seeing Nikki’s possessions constantly reminded him of how he had failed as a father.
Caleb’s troubled past was highlighted, recalling his upbringing in the care system after his mother, Faith Dingle, gave birth to him in prison. A flashback episode on Boxing Day 2022 detailed Caleb’s attempts to connect with the Dingle family, including tracking down Cain, who eventually pushed him away. Caleb’s father, Frank Tate, had also played a role in his complicated history, leading to his arrival in the village seeking revenge on Kim Tate.
Despite his tumultuous past, Caleb found solace and love with Ruby. Their bond was strong, with Ruby even sacrificing her relationship with her own family to be with him. In this episode, Caleb expressed how Ruby had been his lifeline, melting her heart despite her earlier anger over Nikki’s departure. They embraced, realizing they needed each other and a reset away from the village.
Agreeing that a break in Bali sounded perfect, Caleb hoped to eventually bring Nikki back home. However, Ruby insisted their son was an adult capable of making his own decisions about returning. ‘He knows we love him,’ she reassured Caleb as they prepared to leave Emmerdale for a new beginning.
