Emmerdale star James Hooton became emotional during his appearance on Loose Women as he discussed the passing of his co-star, Steve Halliwell. On Thursday, 10th July, James, who portrays Sam Dingle in the ITV soap, shared heartfelt memories of Steve, who played his on-screen father, Zak Dingle, from 1994 until 2023. Steve passed away in December at the age of 77 following a period of illness.

James revealed that Emmerdale will give Zak a fitting on-screen farewell, with scenes set to be filmed next month. He said, “We will be filming scenes that address Zak’s passing. It’s going to be a very respectful tribute to an iconic character.” His voice broke with emotion as he continued, “Steve’s passing at the end of last year was deeply felt. His funeral earlier this year was a moment of reflection for all of us.”

Host Christine Lampard mentioned the impact Steve’s death must have had on the cast, to which James agreed, saying, “Absolutely, he was a good friend of mine.”

Following Steve’s death, his family released a statement, expressing their gratitude for the care he received in his final days. They said, “He went to sleep peacefully with his loved ones around him, making us laugh until the end. He was the most amazing father and grandfather. Family was everything to him.”

Emmerdale also paid tribute to Steve, stating, “It is with deep sadness that we confirm Steve Halliwell, our beloved Zak Dingle, has peacefully passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this very difficult time. Steve will forever be synonymous with Emmerdale, as the proud defender and head of the Dingle family. His heart and humor were evident in all he did.”

Steve’s character, Zak, made his Emmerdale debut in 1994 and was involved in numerous memorable storylines, including the surprise birth of his daughter Belle and the shocking revelation that he was behind the attack on Cain Dingle. His on-screen relationship with wife Lisa, played by Jane Cox, was beloved by fans, and the pair’s performances received praise after Lisa’s character was killed off in 2019.

Despite stepping back from a regular role due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Steve made recurring appearances, with his final scenes airing in June last year. This heartfelt tribute and the upcoming on-screen farewell ensure that Zak Dingle’s legacy will live on in Emmerdale history.
