Matty was wrongfully imprisoned after Samson Dingle falsely accused him of an unprovoked stabbing, which was actually an accident caused by Samson’s malevolent friend, Josh. Being a trans man, Matty’s safety in prison has been a constant concern. Earlier in the week, Amy inadvertently put him in grave danger during a prison visit when she mistook a violent and transphobic inmate, Robo, for Matty’s kind cellmate, Les. She mentioned Matty being trans in passing, leading to a severe beating for Matty in his cell.

His family rushed to his hospital bedside, where a distraught Amy realized her mistake had caused the attack. Matty then revealed a shocking truth: his friend Les was the one who had beaten him, at Matty’s own request. He wanted to escape to the relative safety of the hospital, knowing that once Les was released, he would be left defenseless against Robo.

“Robo was toying with me, threatening me with transphobic abuse,” Matty explained to Amy. “I knew I’d get a proper beating once I was on my own. It wasn’t meant to be this bad, but it got me in here, and that’s all I cared about.”
