Emmerdale star opens up on ‘UK S0AP FlRST’ and says ‘it’s a real priviIege’

Ash Palmisciano, who portrays Matty Barton in Emmerdale, recently discussed his character’s harrowing storyline of being wrongfully imprisoned. Since joining the show in 2018, Matty, formerly known as Hannah Barton before transitioning, has been at the heart of numerous significant plots. In upcoming episodes, Matty finds a glimmer of hope as his cellmate, Lay, accepts him as a trans man and conveys this acceptance to Amy during her visit. Moreover, Matty is thrilled to hear they have a new solicitor, sparking hope that he could soon be released.

As visiting hours conclude, Amy feels relieved to see Matty’s optimistic outlook. However, she inadvertently puts Matty in danger when she is approached by Robbo, whom she mistakenly trusts. Robbo’s sympathetic façade leads Amy to reveal sensitive information about Matty, unknowingly jeopardizing his safety.

Ash Palmisciano shared with the press the immense anxiety and challenges involved in portraying such a gripping storyline. He expressed that it was both challenging and rewarding as an actor to navigate these intense situations. Ash highlighted the significance of this storyline as a pioneering moment for UK soaps, noting the lack of representation of trans characters in such dramatic contexts. He feels privileged to tell an untold story, bringing visibility to experiences unfamiliar to many.

Palmisciano also reflected on the personal impact of playing a trans character facing such profound difficulties. He acknowledged the emotional toll of the role, requiring him to unwind with lighthearted TV shows like “Love Island” and “Bridgerton” after intense filming days. Despite the challenges, Ash finds it fulfilling to channel his personal experiences into a story that resonates with the audience.

Next week, Matty returns to his cell, only to find himself alone with the transphobic prisoner Robbo, who had spoken to his wife. This encounter leaves Matty terrified. The show promises more tense and dramatic scenes as fans eagerly await to see if Matty will emerge from prison unscathed.
