IT’S OVER! BREAKING NEWS: Coronation Street Star Drops Bombshell About Leaving Show | Coronation Street Spoilers 15th – 19th
Coronation Street legend Maureen Lipman, who plays Evelyn Plummer, has revealed she is taking a break from the show, stating that the soap could be better. Lipman admitted that there were challenges with her role on Coronation Street, which she found tough to handle. It was announced last week that Evelyn Plummer will be written out for a brief period towards the end of 2024 as Lipman takes to the stage in a new role.
Before this announcement, Maureen admitted that joining the cast in 2018 as Tyrone Dobbs’ biological grandmother brought unexpected challenges, despite having played a different character in a six-episode stint back in 2002. Speaking to Best Magazine, she said, “I think it’s a tough job because there’s no time to rehearse. It didn’t use to be like that. Coronation Street used to have a fully planned out run by producers, but now you’re in and you’re out. It’s pretty scary when you start, but it’s fine, it’s good for you.”

Lipman also noted the differences in the show over the years. On the Beyond the Title podcast earlier this year, she said, “We’ve come to a point in Corrie now where people are getting murdered in nicer factories, we’re having domestic abuse, and anything that ticks the box of social problems in the 21st century is going to be in your local soap. Whereas back then, you had the freedom to put Martha, Minnie, and Ena in The Snug and have a conversation about the weather.”
Later this year, Maureen will be swapping The Rovers for the stage, appearing in Richmond Theatre’s Beauty and the Beast pantomime as Mrs. Potty. A spokesperson confirmed to Metro that Dame Maureen is taking a sabbatical from Coronation Street towards the end of the year, with plans to return in 2025.
Since joining Coronation Street, fans have seen Evelyn reconnect with her estranged grandson, force her way into his family home, and form a compelling friendship with Roy Cropper. More recently, she has reunited with her long-lost daughter, Cassie Plummer, helping her battle against substance abuse. Evelyn’s departure, even if temporary, will surely leave a significant impact on the show.
