Emmerdale actor James Chase has opened up about the public’s reaction to his character Tom King’s disturbing abuse storyline with wife Belle Dingle. Since the start of their relationship, Tom’s true nature has been revealed through his relentless mental and physical abuse towards Belle. The danger to Belle has escalated, especially after she discovered she was pregnant. Despite Tom’s excitement about becoming a father, Belle secretly decided to terminate her pregnancy. When she lies to Tom about having a miscarriage, his rage leads to a violent outburst in the barn, resulting in him being electrocuted while Belle flees the village.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media outlets, James discussed the public reaction he’s encountered as the distressing storyline unfolds. “Luckily, I haven’t really had anyone be mean to me on the street,” he shared. “I was walking back after filming in the studio the other day, and someone on his phone looked up, saw me, and his face kind of dropped. He tracked me as I walked past but didn’t say anything. I haven’t had any eggs thrown at me or anything like that. It’s been good, to be honest, the response I’ve had from most people.”

James explained that he was prepared for the intense content of the storyline and the likelihood that viewers wouldn’t like his character. “I always knew this role was going to include this storyline. Even when Tom seemed relatively good for the first six months, I knew this was coming because that was the agreement from the start,” he said. “Like me and Eden Taylor-Draper, who plays Belle, have said before, you have to honor the storyline as realistically as possible because this is something that does happen. If the audience hates you, it’s a good sign that you’re doing it properly.”
